Not every “wallet factory” is a factory. Trading companies hide behind factory websites. Here are the five red flags that mean you are dealing with a middleman — or worse.
Five Red Flags at a Glance
| Red flag | What it usually means | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| No in-house CNC photos or video | Trading company using a factory’s website | Ask for a live, time-stamped video walkthrough |
| Unrealistic MOQ for custom tooling | They will resell a stock design as “custom” | Ask exactly what tooling is new for your brief |
| No 13.56 MHz test bench | RFID consistency is out of their control | Demand the test method and a batch report |
| Vague AQL (“we check everything”) | No real sampling plan | Ask for the AQL level per gate, in writing |
| No retained samples | No traceability if defects appear | Require 12-month retained samples per batch |
Red Flag #1: No In-House CNC Photos
Ask for a photo of the CNC floor with a time-stamped label. Trading companies cannot produce this. Real factories will walk you through the floor on video call.
Red Flag #2: Unrealistic MOQ for Custom Design
“50 pcs MOQ for custom tooling” is impossible. Tooling costs $2,000–$20,000. Below 1,000 pcs, the factory loses money on the tooling. Run away.
Red Flag #3: No RFID Test Bench
Ask to see the 13.56 MHz test bench. If they outsource RFID testing, your batch consistency is out of their control.
Red Flag #4: Vague AQL Standard
Serious factories quote AQL 0.65 for consumer goods. “We check everything” means nothing. Ask for the sampling plan.
Red Flag #5: No Retained Samples
Every serious factory retains 3–5 samples per batch for 12 months. No retained samples = no traceability.
FAQ
Q: How do I verify a factory is real?
A: Video call the factory floor. Ask to see the CNC machines, QC bench and packing area. Trading companies cannot fake this.
Q: What if the factory refuses video call?
A: Walk away. Real factories welcome factory visits.
Q: Should I get an NDA before sharing designs?
A: Yes. Always sign NDA before sending CAD files.
Q: What should I do after spotting a red flag?
A: Do not argue it away. Ask for the missing evidence once, in writing, with a deadline. If the answer is vague or delayed, move on — the cost of a wrong factory is always higher than the cost of continuing the search.

Written on the floor
This article was written by our production and QC team — the people who spec tolerances, run the finishing line and inspect every batch. Where it states a capacity, a pull force or a lead time, it comes from a measurement we made, not a supplier’s catalogue. If a number here disagrees with what your own supplier told you, tell us; several of these articles started as a correction from a buyer.
